Design patterns, or to give them their full name Elements of Reusable Object Oriented Software, have become entrenched in the minds of many othewise excellent programmers.

So, tell them to start thinking.

Design patterns fall into the category of educational books that tell you what to think, not how to think. This dangerous type of education goes out of date quickly, and in the case of design patterns, was out of date even when it was released as we already had languages that didn't, and never will, need the advice given.
